Pre-Match Facts

  • Having first met in 1977, Guatemala actually won the first four meetings between the two nations - all friendlies played in Guatemala City. However, the U.S. turned the tide beginning in 1988 and has since racked up a 21-match unbeaten run (15-0-6) against los Chapines, which is the MNT’s record-longest undefeated streak against any nation.
  • Guatemala’s biggest soccer success actually came when it won the 1967 CONCACAF Championship and finished sixth at the 1968 Summer Olympic Games in Mexico City. More recently, los Chapines finished fourth at the 1996 CONCACAF Gold Cup and won the 2001 Copa Centroamerica.
  • Finally, Guatemala City provides one of the highest elevations the U.S. will play at in CONCACAF countries. While not the difficult 7,382 foot elevation that Mexico City is perched upon, Estadio Mateo Flores still sits nearly a mile above sea level at roughly 4,900 feet.

Thanksgiving Give-Back

We’re proud to partner with some of Tulsa’s best soccer supporters groups to help provide a great Thanksgiving to some of Tulsa’s neediest neighbors. Bring a new frozen turkey of any weight to Empire Bar (21+) during any upcoming watch party, or during regular bar hours, and the turkeys will be delivered to John 3:16 Mission. As of Nov. 13, John 3:16 Mission said they were about 2,500 turkeys short of what they planned to be able to deliver this year. We hope you’ll join us and others in the Tulsa soccer community to make Thanksgiving a bit greater this year.

Pre-Match News

  • Since 1989, the USA is 4-1-1 in WCQ matches in Port of Spain. Including friendly matches, all nine previous matches in the Trinidadian capital have been decided by a goal or less. Expand that to the full series, and 15 of the 21 total meetings have also been decided by a single goal.
  • The win to start the campaign on the #RoadtoRussia moved MNT head coach Jurgen Klinsmann into a tie with Bob Bradley for second most wins among U.S. head coaches (43). Bruce Arena leads the pack with 71 victories as coach from 1998-2006.
  • The victory against St. Vincent also pushed the MNT’s record to 10-6-3 in 2015, marking the ninth time the U.S. has earned double digit victories in a calendar year. It’s the second time the MNT has done it under Klinsmann, following 2013’s record breaking year of 16 wins.
  • Trinidad and Tobago won their first match of qualifiers 2-1 against Guatemala on Friday night. “The fact they got a win in Guatemala City is huge for them,” said U.S. head coach Jurgen Klinsmann. “It gives them a good feeling going up against the United States. We have to be prepared for that – it’s one of the reasons we came to Trinidad & Tobago early. We flew right after our game all the way from St. Louis down to Port of Spain to be prepared. We’ll be prepared for the climate and we’ll be prepared for a very physical battle.”

Pre-Match News

  • Eleven players from the USA’s 2014 FIFA World Cup Roster are a part of this group: Jozy Altidore, Kyle Beckerman Matt Besler, Michael Bradley, Geoff Cameron Mix Diskerud, Brad Guzan, Tim Howard, Fabian Johnson, Jermaine Jones and DeAndre Yedlin.
  • Altidore has appeared in eleven games for the MNT this year. The forward scored a pair of goals in the team’s 2-1 win against Peru in September, which was the fourth multi-goal game of his international career. With four goals in 2015, he is now just one goal behind Brain McBride (30) for fourth on the MNT’s all-time goal-scoring list.
  • The MNT has played 16 different CONCACAF nations in 138 total World Cup qualifying matches since 1934, but Friday’s game in St. Louis marks the side’s first ever against St. Vincent and the Grenadines
  • St. Louis is one of the historical homes for American soccer, but Friday’s match marks the MNT’s first game there in nearly 20 years
